Brewmaster, Steamworks Brewing Company | steamworks.com
Julia Hanlon’s obsession with beer started with a post university backpacking trip to Europe. After viewing first hand the reverence and appreciation for beer in countries like Belgium, Germany and the Czech Republic she was instantly hooked.
Unlike many craft brewers, Julia got her start in brewing with a large brewing company—Molson. She was hired into a program that Molson used to train brewers, called the production trainee program. During this two-year apprenticeship, after which she wrote her Institute of Brewing and Distilling (IBD) diploma exams, she worked in every aspect of brewing, from raw materials and brewing right through to packaging and distribution.
After learning many valuable lessons at Molson she made the leap to craft beer and took on the role of brewmaster at Steamworks in May 2015. Her technical training combined with love of her job and dedication to quality, creativity and collaboration has allowed her to flourish in the role.
Julia and her talented brewing team have won many international, national and provincial brewing awards, highlighted by tandem 2016 BC Beer Awards: “Best IPA” and “Best in Show” for Steamworks Flagship IPA.
When she’s not brewing Julia loves spending time with her husband and two daughters and not surprisingly, cooking for friends and family. A past time which has many parallels to the art and science of brewing.
