Nootka Sound Experience
Nootka Sound is a large body of water separating Vancouver Island from Nootka Island. Galiano Bay is nestled within the Sound. This remote part of Vancouver Island is part of the traditional territory of the indigenous Nuu-chah-nuth people and has a fascinating history.
The west coast of Vancouver Island, one of the most rugged and unspoiled places left on earth.
Steep, heavily forested mountains border deep protected inlets and multitudes of sheltered coves and bays. The thick rainforests surrounding the resort are home to a large variety of wildlife, including wolves, cougars, eagles, and bears. Watch for whales, sea lions, sea otters, and other marine life, too!
Half Day Boat Excursion to Historic Nootka Sound
Our first full day in Nootka Sound will include a captivating talk by local historian, author and lecturer, Catherine Gilbert. Catherine has written numerous articles about BC coastal history. You will have an opportunity to learn about the very interesting history of Nootka Sound - in particular, the Nootka Sound Controversy of 1790 when the rivalry between the Kingdom of Great Britain and the Spanish Empire nearly led the two nations to the brink of war. Once educated about the fascinating history of the area, every attendee has the opportunity to visit Nootka Island during the retreat.
Tour of Yuquot
Your retreat includes a half-day boat trip to the village of Yoquot, or Friendly Cove, on Nootka Island. A National Historic Site of Canada, the settlement is the historic place of the first contact between Europeans and First Nations of British Columbia. Excavations reveal that the settlement has been used for at least 4,300 years! The Mowachaht/Muchalaht people who live in Yuguot maintain the site and regularly conduct fascinating tours for visitors.
